Cloud Migration: Is Your Business Ready?

Moving to the cloud can boost productivity and reduce costs — but only if done right. Here's how to assess your readiness and plan a successful migration to Microsoft Azure or AWS.

Cloud migration promises lower infrastructure costs, better scalability, and improved remote work capabilities. But a poorly planned migration can result in extended downtime, data loss, and unexpected costs that dwarf the savings. Before you move, here's how to assess whether your business is truly ready.

Step 1: Audit Your Current Infrastructure

Start by cataloging every application, server, and data store in your environment. Identify which workloads are cloud-ready (modern web apps, email, file storage), which need refactoring (legacy applications with hard-coded server dependencies), and which should stay on-premises (latency-sensitive manufacturing systems, highly regulated data).

Step 2: Evaluate Your Internet Connectivity

Cloud performance is only as good as your internet connection. If your team is uploading and downloading large files, running video conferencing, and accessing cloud applications simultaneously, a standard cable connection may not be sufficient. Consider upgrading to a dedicated fiber connection with a backup circuit before migrating.

Step 3: Choose the Right Cloud Platform

  • Microsoft Azure — best for businesses already using Microsoft 365, Active Directory, or Windows Server
  • Amazon Web Services (AWS) — most mature platform with the widest range of services
  • Google Cloud — strong for data analytics and AI/ML workloads
  • Microsoft 365 / Google Workspace — for businesses primarily needing email, documents, and collaboration

Step 4: Plan Your Data Migration

Data migration is where most cloud projects go wrong. Large datasets can take days or weeks to transfer. Plan for a phased migration — move non-critical workloads first, validate everything works, then migrate business-critical systems during a planned maintenance window.

Step 5: Security and Compliance in the Cloud

Moving to the cloud doesn't transfer your security responsibilities — it changes them. You're still responsible for securing your data, managing access controls, and maintaining compliance. Ensure your cloud configuration follows the principle of least privilege and that all sensitive data is encrypted.
